A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket successfully launched the ICO-G1 satellite on April 14, 2008 at 4:12 p.m. EDT. Blasting off from Space Launch Complex 41 on CCAFS, it marked the first ULA commercial launch of an Atlas V vehicle procured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services. The ICO-G1 satellite is also the heaviest satellite launched to date by an Atlas V, weighing 6,634 kg or 14,625 lb when fueled.

Booster ignition and liftoff. The vehicle rises on its plume of blaze, smoke and steam.

 

The Atlas V-ICO G1 begins its climbout.

Almost clear of its umbilical tower, the vehicle begins its mission. Clear of the tower, the vehicle accellerates. Clear of the tower and the lightning arrestors, the Atlas V- ICO G1 rises majestically on a late afternoon launch.
