As the smoke and steam obscure Launch Complex 41, Atlas V begins her mission. The blue flame of the liquid fuel RD-180 engine is clearly seen. Launched without solid rocket motors, the vehicle gained speed slowly as it climbed to orbit. Launched near sunset at 5:05 pm EST, the vehicle comes into full sunlight as its roll program begins.
