STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program. This two-year mission will employ two nearly identical space-based observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind - to provide the first-ever stereoscopic (3D) measurements to study the Sun and the nature of its coronal mass ejections, or CMEs.
STEREO was launched at 9:52 pm EDT, October 25, 2006 and was successfully inserted into orbit.

STEREO- High Gain Antenna STEREO- IMPACT STEREO- IMPACT BOOM
Shown is the High-gain antenna for communications with Earth. The In situ Measurements of PArticles and CME Transients (IMPACT) investigation provides measurements of the solar wind electrons, interplanetary magnetic fields, and solar energetic particles. Shown is the tip of the IMPACT boom folded for flight. STEREO- PLASTIC STEREO- SCIP STEREO- SECCHI HI
The PLAsma and SupraThermal Ion Composition (PLASTIC) instrument is slated to study coronal-solar wind and solar wind-heliospheric processes. PLASTIC will provide in situ plasma characteristics of protons, alpha particles and heavy ions. The Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) is a suite of remote-sensing instruments consisting of an extreme ultraviolet imager, two white-light coronagraphs, and a heliospheric imager. STEREO- SWAVES STEREO- Star Tracking Camera STEREO- Techs prepare
STEREO/WAVES (S/WAVES) is an interplanetary radio burst tracker that will trace the generation and evolution of traveling radio disturbances from the sun to Earth’s orbit. SECCHI PLASTIC Shown is the Tracking Camera that keeps the vehicle properly oriented. Fully fueled, technicians prepare the STEREO vehicle for spin testing.
