Atlas V - 401

A United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V 401 launch vehicle successfully launched  a multi- satellite payload for the US Air Force - called STP-1.  The vehicles included: Orbital Express' ASTRO and NEXTSat, which will test automated docking techniques for satellite refuelling.

Seen immediately behind it's service tower from this angle, Atlas V (AV-013) and the multi-satellite payload awaits launch. Main engine start. Main engine at full power and LIFTOFF!

AV-013 begins its ascent to orbit. Almost clear of the service tower, the Atlas V/STP-1 vehicle is in the 401 configuration, without solid boosters. From the smoke and the steam, Atlas rises.
